| Robin, if the knees are hurting from that exercise then you need to not go as deep and put your feet out more and drive off of the heals. If your feet are too far back then you cant drive off of your heals. so put them out some and not too wide as to throw off your natural allignment of your hips to knees. Too far out works more butt and I dont think you want to work that do you?OOPS!
Also for your first time 20kgs each side is normal. I see guys with 5 on each side at my gym and I think to my self, Man that looks heavy. Those actually bother my knees though.
For legs squats are king.
